Berivan Imaz’s Defeat in Cologne Mayoral Election Raises Questions on Democracy
Berivan Imaz failed to secure victory in the Cologne mayoral election today.“She was the first person I met as I walked to the rally after the polls closed, and I could sense the outcome given the difficult circumstances created by the coalition of German parties against her.
I believe these elections serve as a test of democratic principles within German parties—particularly their respect for the freedom and voice of voters, including those of immigrant background. Unfortunately, they failed this test.
When parties with different orientations unite solely to defeat a candidate who had already secured a majority in the first round, it reveals a disregard for freedom of opinion and democracy. If they truly believed in those values, they would have respected and defended that initial victory.
Once again, I am convinced that democracy and freedom of opinion exist only in limited and controlled spaces.
Nevertheless, I extend my deep appreciation to Ms. Berivan Imaz for her achievements and wish her continued success in her political journey, with hopes for greater opportunities in the future.”
